The weird zen of getting killed in Dead Cells (or how failure should be a circle)

With winter now approaching down under I've found myself adjusting a bit more to bunker life and able to get a bit more balance with my design work. In saying that I've had a little bit more time to play more games, watch new films  and glean new insight and inspiration which I'm going to want to start talking about more.  So l'm going to write about Dead Cells. Sometimes seen as Hollow Knight's other cousin, Dead Cells is also a metroidvania hack and slash platformer.  It would be unfair to compare both art styles as each aesthetic is drastically different to the other but Hollow Knight is an almost like looking at a classical painting of greek mythology with  tolkeinesque ethrealism while Dead Cells is a beautiful sega megadrive mess of pixilated insanity.  What sets them at odds apart however is how Dead Cells has set up it's Game Over in which there isn't one.  Yes your mortal shell does shuffle off everytime you are slain but yo...

Torn Stitches is now out

It's finally here . This game has been in development for nearly 7 months under the working title "Abandale." Abandale was released in 2018 but was removed due to an error deep in it's files. What began as some form of satanic version of nintendo's animal crossing/silent hill (you can bet I'm not abandoning this idea anytime soon) is now more aligned with jrpg influnces, specifically Witch's House. It comes bundled with a demo for Creeping Chasms which was originally a more stripped down arcade mode but it just didn't have the same pacing as the main game so It's going to be something I'm going to be putting together the next few weeks. Fun trivia, it was the name of my first "band" in high school and it sounded terrible but it does works better on this.

10 Pieces From The Scarlet Gallery Explained

So with The Scarlet Gallery having been released almost a month now I've decided to take a talk a bit of time about the art from the game itself which is a murder mystery surrounding a sinister art exhibition. Part of the concept for illustrating the game was that every scene was to be an individual portrait so almost forty different pieces were created to help tell the story written by Ghoul Shadows. I've tried my best to make this all spoiler free but I wander a little bit dangerously to that if only help explain where these pictures are in the game and what choices went into producing them. Without a further ado, let the tour begin. #1 The Hall It was a good thing I had abandoned a similar project just before I started this one. An espionage thriller about tracking down mind control chemicals? It was never going to work out. The Hall scene involved pursuing a suspect and the player having to decide which way to go. The lighting and coloration was chose...

Annnnnd I'm out

And with that, The Scarlet Gallery has finally been completed. I am working on a proper deep dive into the making of the project and explain everything that went into designing it. All I can say for now is Ghoul's writing seriously fleshed the game out in ways I never really thought and I am amazed at how it really came along into itself.

5 Creepy Songs From The Internet (Album)

In other awesome news my album "5 Creepy Songs From The Internet" was recently featured in one of those listicles. You may recognize one of the tracks "Blessed Be The Destroyers" (In The Tall Grass Mix) is a very punchy version of the Game Over theme from The Scarlet Gallery. http://musicsthehangup.com/blog/spooky-vaporwave-albums-to-listen-to-on-halloween/

Game Of Thrones Deadpool: The Aftermath

I'm not going to say what I thought about season 8 and the series finale because there is an ocean of online commentary on the subject but I have come back to revisit the pool just to see how accurate my personal predictions were.  Jon Snow: Alive [Confirmed]  Sansa: Dead [Nope] Arya: Dead [Nope] Bran: Dead [Nope] Cersei: Dead [Confirmed] Jaime: Dead [Confirmed] Tyrion: Dead [Nope] Daenerys: Dead [Confirmed] Yara: Alive [Confirmed] Theon: Alive [Nope] Euron: Dead [Confirmed] Melisandre: Dead [Confirmed] Jorah: Alive [Nope] The Hound: Alive [Nope] The Mountain: Dead [Confirmed] Samwell: Alive [Confirmed] Gilly: Alive [Confirmed] Little Sam: Alive [Confirmed] Lord Varys: Dead [Confirmed] Brianne of Tarth: Alive [Confirmed] Davos: Dead [Nope] Bronn: Alive [Confirmed] Podrick: Dead [Nope] Tormund Giantsbane: Alive [Confirmed] Grey Worm: Alive [Confirmed] Gendry: Alive [Confirmed] Berric: Dead [Confirmed] Missandi: Dead [Confi...

Garden with it's many paths

In October I will be releasing a Choose Your Own Adventure Game in collaboration with horror writer Ghoul Shadows. I am both an enthusiast and collector of choose your own adventure books, so as I have gotten more and more practice with scripting and multi-media design it was going to be inevitable I was going to try my hand at interactive fiction. As you may know with my previous game Nevermind The Clown and to a lesser extent The Projection I enjoy making games with RPG maker, but outside of it's intended use for predominately JRPGs. I use RPG Maker MV now because the native language is Javascript. Technically I could make a whole project now just with Javascript but the interface for  developing a text based game has a very nice ease of accessibility and it's export features. Eventually I would like to try and do a full javascript title in the future but I am at the moment fascinated with what limits I could push the MV engine to. Imputing my own style of artwork fo...

August 2019

So if you follow the work I do, than you are aware I was working on a Pokemon/H.P. Lovecraft styled homage called The Contaminos. As my efforts stalled and my back was playing up I found myself unable to focus on this topic anymore and eventually I found myself working on other games to try and stretch my brain a bit in order to return. This ended up driving me to feel more fulfilled with more flexibility to make two new Twine based games and a new release called “The Werewolf Ninja.” At first what was initially an experiment to see if I could run a browser based game, I find myself excited at the prospect of doing more with this project. I may return to the roots of the Contaminos, which was initially thought of as a “open world dodge and dash” but in the meantime, I'm having fun as I try and recover my spine a bit. I will post more as I come along with updates to the game. .

The Contaminos first trailer

So here we have the first look at The Contaminos since the Mystery Murder Party video I released in October 2018. It has been a rather long seven months but now it is starting to look a little bit more ready for release. I am hoping to put this out before early June at the latest so hopefully, I don't end up going overboard with any last minute changes.

Black as holes within a memory, Drowning all the ground around me

I'm going to talk about initially, what inspired my newest game I am developing called “The Contaminos: Fallen Earth” and it's counterpart “The Contaminos: Broken Sky.” Roughly 18 years ago I was in Paddy's market in Sydney, the ten-year-old me was looking for Yu-Gi-Oh cards when I came across a rather peculiar discovery.  The counterfeit Pokemon games Jade and Diamond (Funnily enough Diamond would eventually become an actual game years later in the future, with the legendary featured in that game to be a time traveler) share an actual real life relationship with counterfeit jade and diamonds which are worth more than gold in real life. To me seeing these there at that time, a form of cognitive dissonance formed momentarily. These looked real to me but at the same time I was aware that these may have been from another planet. I'm glad I didn't end up getting them because when I asked someone in the playground about Pokemon Jade and Diamond a friend...

Game Of Thrones Deadpool

These are officially my draft picks for the final season of Game Of Thrones, specifically who will live or die. I'm not willing to say if I carefully calculated interactions, relationships and ran that through an analysis of cinematic beats or if I put all of these onto a dart board and threw a lot of knives. Jon Snow: Alive Sansa: Dead Arya: Dead Bran: Dead Cersei: Dead Jaime: Dead Tyrion: Dead Daenerys: Dead Yara: Alive Theon: Alive Euron: Dead Melisandre: Dead Jorah: Alive The Hound: Alive The Mountain: Dead Samwell: Alive Gilly: Alive Little Sam: Alive Lord Varys: Dead Brianne of Tarth: Alive Davos: Dead Bronn: Alive Podrick: Dead Tormund Giantsbane: Alive Grey Worm: Alive Gendry: Alive Berric: Dead Missandi: Dead

Abyss

Space. Endless void. Rustling air vents. Banging walls. I changed direction from a cabin in the woods to the final frontier. Initially inspired by Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, I found myself floating more and more off topic. The deciding factor was after I began implementing a new lighting engine. Testing it out on the Cabin gave me the chills and after listening to endless podcasts about Silent Hills: P.T. And watching Prometheus and Alien Covenant back to back I decided to go the route of a more traditional psychological horror game. What had to happen though to realise this new aesthetic was that I had to pick up a months work of development and toss it into the fire. Letting go is sometimes just as important as catching up to your goals even if that means destroying something you firmly had visualise to come through to the end properly.  Special thanks to everyone who contributed and I look forward to seeing you all next time.

horizons

added nevermind the clown and crown of extinction to gamejolt, so you can get them there if you are so inclined to. I've been working with a live-action project at the moment alongside the contaminos and abandale games which I hope will all tie in together. the live action project is actually running live now if you can find it. As for my games, it's a lot of heavy work alongside the other things but I hope they will pick up sooner.
